Ollie the 1-year-old

I can't believe Oliver is 1!!! Where did the time go? I am so grateful that he is strong, healthy and that he's got a nice round head :)
We celebrated Oliver's birthday on Sunday (the day before his actual birthday) so that some family could come over. Uncle Chis, and GiGi & Papa Campbell celebrated Ollie's special day with us. They loved watching Ollie eat make a mess of the cake.
Oliver loved eating cake. Especially the chocolate frosting.
Ollie wasn't interested in opening presents (most likely because he didn't understand what to do), so Big Brother Calvin happily volunteered to show him how.
Oliver loved all of his presents...for about 5 seconds each. Typical 1-year-old.
However, Oliver especially loved this toy from Uncle Chris. It makes music with flashing lights, he can unlock doors, and play with little farm animal figures. A 1-year-old's dream. Unfortunately, whenever Calvin tried to play with it Ollie threw a BIG FIT! Geez! I guess it's not a 1-year-old party unless there's some crying, riiight?
Overall, Oliver had a blast. And he loved all the attention :)
The next morning (Oliver's actual birthday), Jake made pancakes with chocolate chips! Ollie devoured them.
For a lot of the day, Oliver was PASSED OUT! I think he was still exhausted from all the partying he did the day before.
Happy Birthday, little one! Thanks for joining our family. We love you!

Oliver's 1st tooth!

Hi! I'm Oliver.
I'm 6 months old and my first tooth is growing in on the bottom!

I like to...
roll and roll and roll all over the floor
make messes wherever I go
eat rice cereal
chew on my favorite elephant toy
and play giggling games with big brother, Calvin.

I can't wait to start crawling!

Calvin's 1st Dental Appointment

I've been dreading taking Calvin to his first dental appointment.  I prepped myself for the worst. I imagined him kicking, screaming, and being as uncooperative as possible. Not that he hates brushing his teeth -- he's just had bad experiences with nurses and doctors in the past and I figured we would have a similar experience.

I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
Calvin was a perfect patient.

He happily laid there as our dental hygienist scratched, squirted, brushed, and flossed his teeth.
What a champ.
And no cavities. YAY!
I'm so grateful his first dental experience went amazingly well.

A Typical Tuesday Night

Calvin playing in the bathtub.
Oliver hanging in a hammock.
Mamma listening to Pandora Radio.
Life is good.

Did I mention Oliver can roll over now?
Well, he can.
And he does.
As often as he can.
At the most awkward moments.

But don't worry, I'm there to help him get out of those sticky situations.

I love this little guy.

Family Hike

Our first family hike as a family of 4 was a success!

We hiked 2.5 miles with our boys at the San Tan Mountain Regional Park. Calvin pretty much jogged the entire trail and climbed as many big rocks he could find. He was a good little trooper. I'm grateful for his enthusiasm to get out into nature and go on adventures. Oliver enjoyed the ride and took a nap. He's such a good baby :)

Our Faux Easter Sunday

Since we didn't get dressed in our Sunday best on Easter day this year due to watching General Conference, we dressed up the following Sunday. My boys are so handsome.

Too bad Calvin refuses to cooperate for photos...

This is as good as it gets!

Happy Easter! ...last week!

Easter Weekend with our buddy Justin :)

Justin came to visit!!
This Seattle-guy has definitely missed the sun and the Scott Family. We loved hanging out with him in the land of sunshine and warmth.

We enjoyed some sun rays at the pool. Calvin and Justin are buddies :) In fact, Calvin thought Justin was his friend. Not mom and dad's.

Then the adults (Justin, Jake, and I) went out to the IPic theater out in Scottsdale. That was AWESOME! We sat in HUGE, super comfy reclining chairs. There were complimentary bags of popcorn, blankets, and pillows. We ordered fancy appetizers and drinks with our personal waiter. And, oh yeah, we saw the movie Furious 7. I loved the movie. Especially how it portrayed a special tribute for Paul Walker. Rest in Peace, man!
When the movie was over, we walked out and saw Paul Walker's car from 2 Fast 2 Furious. Ain't she a beauty?

One night, we made homemade pizza for dinner. Calvin and Justin did a great job. They were delicious!

Justin's last day was Easter Sunday. Calvin loved hunting for his eggs in our field. The eggs were pretty hard to find, but Calvin gathered them all...we think.

We loved having Easter fall on General Conference this year. It's a wonderful way to think of Christ as we listen to His prophets speak to us.

Happy Easter!! Thanks for joining us, Justin!

The Yuckos

My poor Calvin Boy has had diarrhea for a week and has been vomiting intermittently. It's so sad to see him get panicked when these awful bodily functions occur. As a mom, all I can do is watch. I comfort him, teach him how to recognize cues, replenish his electrolytes, and feed him foods that are gentle on his digestive system.

Ultimately, this stomach bug (Calvin calls them "the yuckos") has to take its toll and Cal's got to learn patience. Even though he's feeling awful, he hides it quite well. Today he picked out his own outfit, got dressed all by himself, and played nicely for hours -- as if nothing happened last night. What a champ.

Favorite blanket: "Blue Snowflake"
Favorite TV show today (it changes often): Jake and the Neverland Pirates
(Plays with the figurines while watching the show)
When feeling sick: Needs lots of blankets surrounding him but not on him

On the other hand, Oliver is doing great! He's as healthy as a horse and as happy as a clam. I love having him a part of my life.

5 months old
Length: 25.25 in (25th percentile)
Weight: 13.5 lbs (3rd percentile)
Head circumference: 17 in (50th percentile)

Oliver's Birth Story: Part II

Our dear sweet Oliver had a rough first 2 weeks of life.
Diagnosis: underdeveloped lungs (which was expected being a premature baby) and pneumonia.

He got some extra help through a cannula to increase his O2 levels and he received antibiotics for the pneumonia.

Most of the time we stared at our son struggling to breathe. The other part of the time we watched his stats on this monitor to see how his O2 levels were doing.

Here's a quick clip of Ollie trying to breathe. It always made me sad seeing him struggling to do something that should come so easily.

He was initially on TPN to help him maintain nutrients and keep his weight up. When the doctors said it was okay to feed him some milk, I got to feed him 1ml of my milk through a syringe. But that wasn't enough, he was squawking for more! We gave him a little at a time to decrease the possibility of refeeding syndrome as well as avoid aspiration.

After feeding him with the syringe, the nurse helped me burp him. I was afraid of getting the tubes and wires messed up.

This is the first time Jake got to hold Oliver! They got some good skin-to-skin bonding time.
Why are there some random pink and blue socks on his hands? Oliver kept scratching off the tape on his face and pulling out his cannula. He's a little fighter. So a nurse put them on him so he'd stop pulling out all the tubes.

And here is my Mom's first time holding him. He was tube free :)

Eventually, Oliver was breathing well enough that he was allowed to leave the nursery and sleep in the same room as me! I was so excited. I couldn't keep my eyes off of him.

Calvin LOVED being near baby Ollie. He was excited to hold him (only for about 5 seconds).

Thanks to Marissa's visit, she was able to care for Calvin at home while Jake and I stayed in the hospital to be near baby Oliver. (Thanks Marissa!) That was a huge help. Every day, she would come by the hospital so Calvin could see us and she could have some good bonding time with her newest nephew.

After 14 days of being in a hospital, Oliver and I were finally discharged. We were so grateful for the special care that Oliver had to make sure he was 100% okay to go home, but man -- we were ready to get out of there.

Oliver was still working on learning how to breastfeed, so his big brother got to help feed him with a bottle. Calvin loves being a big helper.

I love being home with my boys. Life is different with 2 kids in our lives, but Jake and I are excited to embark on this adventure as parents together.
